Casey’s DJ pick of the week is
“Out My Head” by Pop R&B pair, COHOST. The Nashville trio fuses a modern sound with early 70s funk, with clear inspiration from bands like Bee Gees and Run DMC.
The funk duo hit the scene just last year, but is making a strong start. “Out My Head” is the third single to follow their debut album Lost Diamond, which released back in 2022. The band consists of two multi-instrumentalists: James Templeton and Chris Collins. Templeton acts as the main songwriter and producer for the band. For “Out My Head,” Templeton says the lyrics, “[revolve] around the echoes of those who love you and keep you afloat in the lonely nights.” The echoes of the chorus, repeating reverberantly, “Can’t get you out my head,” are imitative of the song’s subject.
This track emits the classic sound of COHOST, with a sharp, jazzy guitar, and a retro funk-inspired bass line. Sparkling synths reminiscent of true 70s disco and funk make a triumphant return to modern pop through this track. COHOST continues to fuse classics with modernity, with a spoken verse immediately following the track’s booming chorus. This fusion duo is one to keep an eye on in the scene as they continue to bend and reinvent genres.
